Confession
Confession
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." — 1 John 1:9
The Wisdom of the Holy Canons
“Those who have received from God authority to bind and loose must take into consideration the quality of the sin and the readiness of the sinner to return, and thus offer a treatment suited to the sin in question, lest by employing an immoderate adjustment in one direction or the other, they fail in compassing the salvation of the one ailing… for all that matters to God and to the person undertaking pastoral leadership consists in the recovery of the straying sheep, and in the healing of the one wounded by the serpent.” — Canon 102 of the Penthekte Council (692 AD)
The canon above beautifully captures the essence of Confession and Spiritual Direction within the Orthodox tradition. It is viewed as a therapeutic science—concerned not with legalistic judgment, but with the healing, restoration, and salvation of the whole person.
A Sacrament of Healing
The Mystery of Holy Confession provides a sacred opportunity for the reconciliation and restoration of our relationship with God and the Church. When our spiritual bond is distorted by serious or habitual sin, Confession serves as a "spiritual hospital" for the soul. Within this grace-filled context, the priest acts as a spiritual physician, offering individualized guidance and therapeutic direction tailored to the unique needs and struggles of the person.
Preparation for Holy Communion
While Confession is not strictly required before every reception of the Holy Eucharist, its vital importance in the life of a Christian cannot be overstated. We approach the Chalice not as perfect individuals, but as people in need of Christ’s mercy. Regular participation in the Mystery of Confession ensures that our hearts are continuously purified, allowing us to receive the Body and Blood of Christ with a "clean heart and a humble spirit.
A Living Relationship
Regular Confession is essential to maintaining a proper relationship with Christ and His Church, which is a fundamental prerequisite for Holy Communion. Just as we must continually nourish and care for our physical bodies, the soul requires regular "spiritual hygiene" to remain healthy and vibrant.
Through the regular practice of the Sacrament, we are not merely "reporting" sins; we are engaging in an active dialogue with God. This consistency allows us to:
- Heighten Spiritual Awareness: By examining our hearts frequently, we become more sensitive to the subtle ways we drift from God’s path.
- Deepen Humility: Frequent confession keeps us grounded in the reality of our need for God’s mercy, preventing the spiritual pride that can separate us from His grace.
- Receive Healing Strength: The Sacrament provides the specific "medicine" and strength needed to overcome habitual struggles, transforming our character over time.
Regular confession is essential for maintaining a living relationship with Christ and is a vital prerequisite for receiving Holy Communion. It ensures that when we approach the Holy Chalice, we do so with a heart that is not only repentant but also actively seeking to be a more fitting dwelling place for the Lord.
Scheduling
To experience this renewal of peace, please call the Church Office to schedule a time for Confession or Spiritual Direction with our Parish Priest.
What if I haven’t been to Confession in many years?
There is no better time than the present to return. The Church is a hospital, and the priest is here to help you heal, not to judge you. If you have been away for a long time, simply let the priest know; he will guide you through the process and help you open your heart at a pace that is comfortable for you.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Preparation begins with prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind the things that have caused a separation between you and God. Many find it helpful to look through a "Brief Examination of Conscience" based on the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes. You may even bring a written list if it helps you feel more organized and calm.
Is everything I say kept private?
Yes, absolutely. The seal of Confession is sacred and inviolable. Under Orthodox Canon Law, a priest is strictly forbidden from revealing anything discussed during the Sacrament to anyone, for any reason without your explixit consent.
What happens during the service?
Usually, you and the priest will stand or sit before an icon of Christ. The priest acts as a witness and a guide, but you are speaking to Christ Himself. After you have confessed, the priest will place his epitrachelion (stole) over your head and read the prayer of absolution, through which God grants forgiveness.
How often should I go?
This is best discussed with your spiritual father (the priest), as every soul’s needs are different. However, a common practice is to seek Confession during the four major fasting seasons of the Church year (Lent, Advent, etc.), or whenever you feel a heavy burden on your conscience.
"I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents."
